Attend

Choose how to see someone with more care, generosity, and attention.

The Exercise

Bring one person to mind or let one person catch your attention. Draw one card and let it change what you notice. Stay with it for a while. When you are ready, add a second card; it offers another way of looking without replacing the first.

More about this exercise +

Why

Attention selects. Attend lets you practise appreciation, compassion, wonder, or presence without claiming to know another person’s life.

How

Read the first card slowly and look again. If a story starts taking over, return to what is actually present. Add a second card only when you are ready, and hold both invitations together.

Ways to use it

Attend can remain entirely in the mind. The person may be familiar, remembered, seen at a distance, or just noticed. They do not need to know you are doing the exercise, and it does not require staring or contact.

Preparation

Familiar places often work well because habit has taught us to stop seeing what is there.

Background

Within Tiny Encounters, Attend forms the bridge between Imagine and Meet. Imagine changes the stories you hold open; Attend changes the quality of your attention.

One card drawn. Stay with its invitation for a while.
